In contrast to the classical 6-26 and GIAB geometries, the GIXS geometry is ideal for studying sets of crystalline planes that are perpendicular to the sample surface.

With GIXS facilities at synchrotron radiation sources the structure of fractions of monolayers can be studied, even those of relatively weakly scattering materials.

Other X-ray surface probe methods which have not as yet found widespread use but are applicable to electrode/solution interfacial studies are based on X-ray standing waves and glancing angle X-ray diffraction. 

Surfaces structures especially will be of future interest. They can be investigated by glancing angle X-ray diffraction, since with this technique the X-rays penetrate only through a few atomic layers at the sample surface. Therefore, the measured reflections can give information about two-dimensionally ordered surface structures.
