Ghosting phenomenon

Our initial attempts to use this HPLC clean-up of urine samples prior to quantitation of the carboxy metabolite were successful down to a concentration of 5 ng/ml. At lower concentrations we obtained erratic results. The problem was subsequently traced to partial retention of the cannabinoid in the injector, giving rise to the so-called "ghosting" phenomenon. [Pg.67]

While arguing what is essentially the understanding of Heisenberg or virtually any other contemporary atomic physicist or chemist, the narrator rhetorically dresses up atomic science in occult guises for occult ends Electrons are quite as elusive as ghosts we are only aware of them as the conclusion to a colossal sorites. The evidence for ghosts is as strong as that for any other phenomenon in nature (217). [Pg.214]

We should not be surprised to see ghosts—they always occur near saddle-node bifurcations (Sections 4.3 and 8.1) and indeed, a tangent bifurcation is just a saddle-node bifurcation by another name. But the new wrinkle is that the orbit returns to the ghostly 3-cycle repeatedly, with intermittent bouts of chaos between visits. Accordingly, this phenomenon is known as intermittency (Pomeau and Manneville 1980). [Pg.364]

Field NOx measurements have been made in a number of process heaters, at locations before and after the convection sections. In nearly all cases, NO readings after the convection section have been higher than before the convection section. In some cases, the increase in NO has been as much as 50%. This phenomenon has been lightheartedly referred to as "ghost NO " because of its unknown origin. It indicates that either additional NO is being formed in the convection section, that there is some systematic measurement problem, or some... [Pg.176]

Other requirements are placed on the carrier gas and the stationary phase. As indicated in the PTGC instrumentation list, the carrier gas must be dry to prevent the accumulation of water (and other volatile impurities) at the cool column inlet (before the start of a run) since this phenomenon will result in ghost peaks during the PTGC run. One conunon solution to this problem is to insert a 5A molecular sieve dryer in the gas line before the instrument. [Pg.184]

It seems probable that the activation of an ATP-ase by Ca ions indicates that a transfer mechanism for Ca exists in the membranes of the ghosts. This transfer would be directed outwards. The efflux of calcium from ghosts is greater if ATP is added to the system. Moreover, salyrgan inhibits this phenomenon and the effective concentration is within the range of that found to inhibit the ATP-ase activity. 2,6-Dichlorophenol-indophenol. an inhibitor of the ATP-ase activated by Ca ions, prevents the accumulation of calcium in sarcoplasmic vesicles. [Pg.198]
