Haber, Fritz (1868-1934) A chemist and teacher of Jewish heritage (later a convert to Christianity) born in Germany, Haber developed the Haber process to produce ammonia used in fertilizers, animal feed, and explosives, for which he was awarded the 1918 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. At Berlin s Kaiser Wilhelm Institute (later the Haber Institute) between 1911 and 1933, he developed chlorine gas used in World War I, experimented with the extraction of gold from seawater, and oversaw production of Zyklon B, the cyanide-based pesticide that was employed at extermination camps during World War II. [Pg.2008]
