Phenylthio germane

The trap at -23° contains pure (phenylthio)germane (GeH3SC5Hs 0.181 g, 0.98 mmole) which is identified by its H NMR spectrum. The trap at -196° contains excess digermylcarbodiimide, which is identified by its NMR spectrum. A small amount of nonvolatile white product remains inside the reaction vessel. The yield of (phenylthio)germane, based on benzenethiol consumed, is 80% (checker 69%). 

Phenylthio)germane is a colorless liquid with a characteristically foul odor. It is quite stable at room temperature in sealed glass ampules and may be distilled satisfactorily under high vacuum without heating. The H NMR spectrum in cyclohexane solution consists of two resonances 5GeH at 4.71 ppm and 6CH, a multiplet at 7.20-6.95 ppm (downfield of tetramethylsilane). Strong features in the solid-phase infrared spectrum are observed above 600 cm at 2048 (s), 1477 (s), 1436 (ms), 1023 (ms), 864 and 846 (ms), 798 (vs), 737 (vs), 696 and 688 (vs). ... 

Desulfurative silylation. Dithioacetals are converted to alkylsilanes on reaction with Cp2Ti[P(OEt)3]2 and EtjSiH. Allylsilanes are produced from p,y-unsaturated dithioacetals or l,3-bis(phenylthio)-l-alkenes. Germanes and stannanes are similarly obtained.
