Each of these soil categories requires its own approach. A first guideline when evaluating the required geological and geotechnical information for a dredge area can be found in Table 3.1. 

The intensity of ground investigation will strongly depend on the heterogeneity and nature of the subsoil. Two main types of soil investigation can be defined  

Often a soil investigation campaign is set up in two phases. The results from the first phase can be used to plan the second phase.
