The importance of the paratext in the transaction between author and readers has been established by Gerard Genette in Seuils (Paris Seuil, 1987). 

Baudelaire narrates De Quincey s discourse to produce what Gerard Genette calls discours narrativise ou raconte the original text is summarized and paraphrased at the same time, but the result remains faithful to the ideas expressed by De Quincey. The same strategy, but this time closer to indirect speech, is also used in Baudelaire s next sentence ... 

The peculiar structure of that climactic sentence causes the hue of the figure s skin to lift away from its skin, to become an instance of a formal quality - perfect whiteness - rather than an element in the description of the figure in the vapor. It exemplifies what Gerard Genette calls aspectual attention, a type of attention that concerns itself not with the identity of the object ( what is it ) - and even less with its function ( what purpose does it serve ) - but rather with its outward appearance, its aspect- ki contours and colors what does it look like This is the kind of attention that Pym gives...
