The unexpected stabilities of the alkylated Qo and C70 cations (3a-d, 7, HCso, and 10) allowed preparation of these cations either in a strong acid or in an organic solvent, which enabled them to be analyzed by NMR and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy. A quantitative evaluation of the thermodynamic stabilities of 3a-d and 7, by two different methods, has been carried out.
