Gate blocked

A blocked gate is most commonly the result of excessive cooling of the melt in the gate, and may often be caused by an error perpetrated during construction or installation. Table 11.3 shows some of the causes of a blocked gate.

Repair of the calcium gate/block due to diffusion occurs equally simply because of ionic depletion and competitive association. In particular, relaxation of the sodium or potassium ionic gradient in the vicinity of the open channel mouth quickly brings the levels of these ions locally to that of calcium. At that point, calcium competes effectively to bind to the phosphate. The system repairs to its resting state. The monovalent cations then can build up the concentration gradients observed through diffusion. 

An approach to the treatment of this replacement transfer problem is the analog of the simple valence bond treatment in the molecular electronic problem. Von Neumann was able to construct a self-reproducing UTM embedded within a 29-state/5-cell neighborhood two-dimensional cellular automaton, composed of several tens of thousands of cells. It was, to say the least, an enormously complex machine . Its set of 29 states consist largely of various logical building blocks (AND and OR gates, for example), several types of transmission lines, data encoders and recorders, clocks, etc. Von Neumann was unfortunately unable to finish the proof that his machine was a UTM before his death, but the proof was later completed and published by Arthur Burks [vonN66]. 

Besides sodium channels, other ion channels such calcium- and potassium channels as well as certain ligand-gated channels are affected by local anaesthetics. However, this plays only a minor role for nerve block but may have more impact on adverse effects induced by systemical concentrations of these drags.
