Gasoline converter operation

Conventional Transportation Fuels. Synthesis gas produced from coal gasification or from natural gas by partial oxidation or steam reforming can be converted into a variety of transportation fuels, such as gasoline, aviation turbine fuel (see Aviation and other gas turbine fuels), and diesel fuel. A widely known process used for this appHcation is the Eischer-Tropsch process which converts synthesis gas into largely aHphatic hydrocarbons over an iron or cobalt catalyst. The process was operated successfully in Germany during World War II and is being used commercially at the Sasol plants in South Africa. [Pg.277]

A modem petroleum refinery is a complex system of chemical and physical operations. The cmde oil is first separated by distillahon into fractions such as gasoline, kerosene, and fuel oil. Some of the distillate fractions are converted to more valuable products by cracking, polymerization, or reforming. The products are treated to remove undesirable components, such as sulfur, and then blended to meet the final product specifications. A detailed analysis of the entire petroleum production process, including emissions and controls, is obviously well beyond the scope of this text. [Pg.518]

Wliile some refiners have reduced residual fuel production by supplying heavier grades, others have eliminated residtial fuel completely by installing cokers or hydrocrackers. These are process tmits that convert residua to gasoline or distillate. They are very expensive to install and operate, but can be justified when there is an oversnpply of residual fuel. [Pg.1016]

The gas-powered drilling and production internal combustion engines can be set up at the manufacturer to operate on gasoline, natural gas, or liquified petroleum gas (LPG). The manufacturer can also set up the engine to operate on all three types of gas fuels. This is accomplished by providing engines with conversion kits that can be used to convert the engine in the field. [Pg.396]

A conventional FCC unit can be an olefin machine with proper operating conditions and hardware. Catalysts with a low unit cell size and a high silica/alumina ratio favor olefins. Additionally, the addition of ZSM-5, with its lower acid site density and very high framework silica-alumina ratio, converts gasoline into olefins. A high reactor temperature and elimination of the post-riser residence time will also produce more olefins. Mechanical modification of the FCC riser for millisecond cracking has shown potential for maximizing olefin yield. [Pg.323]
