HI decomposition gaseous

In the gaseous HI decomposition reaction, H2 separation membranes can play a critical role. The decomposition reaction HI —> H2 +12 is an equilibrium reaction that has conversion efficiency around 22% at 450 °C. The enhancement of decomposition rate by removing H2 from the reactor is possible. Therefore, functional membranes that can separate H2 from the reactor will result in a reduction of HI gas amount that needs to be recycled through the reactor. In addition, an effective separation membrane can maintain the purity of the produced H2 gas. A number of H2 separation membranes have been extended for many applications. Unfortunately, most of them use metals such as Pd, Pd-Ag, and Zr. Because these materials are susceptible to corrosion in an iodine-rich environment, they are not suitable for this application (Kar et al., 2012). [Pg.225]
