Glycosphingolipids (GSLs) are primarily synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi apparatus [24,25,26] and are internalized by endocytosis [27]. The known biosynthetic pathways of GSLs and gangliosides are depicted in O Fig. 1 and O Fig. 2, respectively.

Moreover, the use of this model demonstrates that the massive intracellular accumulation of GMl due to the loss of B-galactosidase activity affected the biosynthetic pathway of this ganglioside, suggesting the occurrence of... 

The use of metabolic labelling with radioactive ManNAc has corroborated many of the structural studies and provided an in vivo method of identifying the biosynthetic pathways and subcellular localization of the gangliosides e.g. Caputto et al. 1974, Dreyfus et al. 1975, 1976, ROsner 1975, Landa et al. 1979).
