Figure 9.18 shows Galvele s ASM model [46,47]. The model predicts SCC in metals and has been also appHed to Hquid metal embrittlement. According to this model, the cracks grow by the surface diffusion of metals and ions from the crack tip to the crack walls. The mechanism predicts that the surface mobility atoms are enhanced by the presence of low-melting surface compounds compared to diffusion in the metal crystal.
