Gallium stable phase

The stable phase at ambient pressure and temperature conditions is the hexagonal wurtzite-type stmcture with space group PGjmc (no. 186). Figure 3.2a shows the unit cell of the wurtzite stmcture with alternating layers of gallium and nitrogen each... 

The stable phase of gallium is GaOOH(s). Although solubility constant data have been acquired for this phase for a considerable period of time, it is only most recently have reliable solubility constant data been reported. The solubility of the phase can be described by reaction (2.13) (M = Ga " ", x = 1). 

The stability of the fee 8-plutonium, which is malleable and easily shaped, is important because of its uses (in nuclear weapons, etc.). This phase may be retained, either in stable or metastable conditions, down to room temperature by the addition of gallium or aluminium. In a way, the two versions of the phase diagram may now be reconciled. The diagram in Fig 5.16 (a) is adequate for practical applications... 

The presence of a stable diborane-like molecule [H2Ga(/x-H)]2 in both solution and the vapor phase suggests that the chemistry of gallane has a marked similarity to that of diborane, that is, (1). The analogy between the gallium and boron hydrides is extended by the synthesis and structural characterization of the mixed gallaborane, GaBHe (1). 

Under certain conditions, in the presence of a cosurfactant, e.g., butanol, and/or alkaline aqueous phase, reverse micelles swell, accepting a large amount of water, and transparent and stable microemulsions are formed. Microemulsion can also be obtained when typical surfactants with cosurfactant are present in the organic phase. Such systems enable the rapid extraction of germanium(IV) and gallium(III) with alkyl derivatives of 8-hydroxyquinoline, while classical extraction needs days of phase contact.
