From Lithium or Sodium Arenetellurolates

Lithium arenetellurolates reacted with mercury (II) chloride in tetahydrofuran to give mercury bis[arenetellurolates].  

The compounds are soluble only in coordinating media. They are thermochromic, being red at room temperature and bright yellow at — 78°. In an evacuated, sealed tube at 120°, the compounds decompose to mercury telluride and diaryl tellurium.  

When diorgano ditellurium compounds dissolved in an organic solvent are shaken with elemental mercury, the mercury inserts into the Tc-Te bond.

When equimolar amounts of diphenyl ditellurium, bis[4-ethoxyphenyl] ditellurium, and mercury(Il) chloride were refluxed in ethanol, a yellow solid precipitated, for which the structure of an arenetellurolatomercury chloride was postulated .
