Foreign body granulomas develop in response to fragments of wood, thorns, glass or plastic objects that have penetrated the soft tissues of the foot. They are almost invariably found in the subcutaneous fat at the plantar aspect of the foot, particularly in subjects who walk barefoot. The US characteristics of these lesions have been described in Chapters 2 and 11 (Fig. 17.58). 

Around the movable parts of the artificial joints a new connective tissue capsule is formed. Its structure is roughly similar to that of a normal joint capsule but never identical. The tissue is much coarser as regeneration is accompanied by a foreign body reaction to fragments of metal and plastic as well as to the components of bone cement.
