Force constants hydrogen complex stability

Immunochemical techniques are based on the immunological reaction derived from the binding of the antibody to the corresponding antigen. This reaction is reversible and is stabilized by electrostatic forces, hydrogen bonds, and Van der Waals interactions. The formed complex has an affinity constant (k j that can achieve values around the order of 1010 M. This great affinity and specificity between the specific antibody and the antigen (or the analyte) have turned these techniques into powerful analytical tools to detect and quantify... [Pg.135]

The presence of hydrophobes provides a basis to employ solvophobic driving forces. In water, for example, hydrophobic collapse is used to stabilize folded proteins and the structure of DNA. Moreover, when hydrogen bonds are buried inside a relative hydrophobic microenvironment with a low dielectric constant, the strength of the interactions is intrinsically stronger. The formation of complexes driven by hydrophobic collapse benefits from the liberation of water molecules between the apolar surfaces. [Pg.166]
