Floral cup

Perianth - The perianth appears to consist of two alternating, trimerous whorls that are fused into a short floral tube at the base. The outer whorl consists of broad, possibly five-veined, tepals. The inner whorl consists of narrower, three-veined tepals (Fig 3.5G). Scattered gland-like structures, presumably oil glands, are present on the inside of the floral cup (not shown). [Pg.59]

In summary, Powhatania shares the floral cup with Monimiaceae, Hernand-iaceae and Lauraceae, and its trimerous organization with Hernandiaceae and Lauraceae. It further shares the shape and position of the staminal appendages with some extant taxa in the Lauraceae. Powhatania may thus represent either an extinct taxon along the stem of the clade Monimiaceae/Hernandiaceae/ Lauraceae, the clade Hernandiaceae/Lauraceae, or perhaps the stem group of one of the three extant families. [Pg.79]

CALYX.—Row of floral leaves cupping the remainder of the flower. [Pg.112]
