Flammability limits structure

Targets and spirals have been observed in the CIMA/CDIMA system [13] and also in dilute flames (i.e. flames close to their lean flammability limits) in situations of enlianced heat loss [33]. In such systems, substantial fiiel is left unbumt. Spiral waves have also been implicated in the onset of cardiac arrhytlnnia [32] the nomial contractive events occurring across the atria in the mannnalian heart are, in some sense, equivalent to a wave pulse initiated from the sino-atrial node, which acts as a pacemaker. If this pulse becomes fragmented, perhaps by passing over a region of heart muscle tissue of lower excitability, then spiral structures (in 3D, these are scroll waves) or re-entrant waves may develop. These have the incorrect... [Pg.1107]

Fuel from a fiilly unobstructed jet would be diluted to a level below its lower flammability limit, and the flammable portion of the cloud would be limited to the jet itself. In practice, however, jets are usually somehow obstructed by objects such as the earth s surface, surrounding structures, or equipment. In such cases, a large cloud of flammable mixture will probably develop. Generally, such a cloud will be far from stagnant but rather in recirculating (turbulent) motion driven by the momentum of the jet. [Pg.50]

Semi-empirical formulae, based only on molecular structure, have been derived which allow flammability limits to be calculated for hydrocarbons and alcohols. Flash points, autoignition temperatures and boiling points may also be calculated from molecular structure for these classes. Quoted examples indicate the methods... [Pg.153]

Pellistors are used to detect flammable gases like CO, NH3, CH4 or natural gas. Some flammable gases, their upper and lower explosion limits and the corresponding self-ignition temperatures are listed in Tab. 5.1. This kind of gas sensor uses the exothermicity of gas combustion on a catalytic surface. As the combustion process is activated at higher temperatures, a pellistor is equipped with a heater coil which heats up the active catalytic surface to an operative temperature of about 500 °C. Usually a Platinum coil is used as heater, embedded in an inert support structure which itself is covered by the active catalyst (see Fig. 5.33). The most frequently used catalysts are platinum, palladium, iridium and rhodium. [Pg.143]

Finally, there must be a flame acceleration mechanism, such as congested areas, within the flammable portion of the vapor cloud. The overpressures produced by a vapor cloud explosion are determined by the speed of flame propagation through the cloud. Objects in the flame pathway (such as congested areas of piping, process equipment, etc.) enhance vapor and flame turbulence. This turbulence results in a much faster flame speed which, in turn, can produce significant overpressures. Confinement that limits flame expansion, such as solid decks in tnulti-lcvc process structures, also increases flame speed. Without flame acceleration, a large fireball or flash fire can result, but not an explosion. [Pg.147]

Limit the quantity of flammable or combustible liquids that can remain in the structure or area available to fuel a fire and, thus, limit potential damage to the process equipment. [Pg.239]
