Flame-retardant finishes mechanisms

The second series of reactions using JV,JV -dimethylurea was studied in an effort to understand the mechanism of fabric flame-proofing (81PS207). Under some conditions these reactions can produce polymers that may be used as flame-retardant finishes for cotton. [Pg.19]

Phosphine reacts with formaldehyde in the presence of hydrochloric acid to produce tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium chloride, THPC. This material is used in flame-retardant finishes for cotton fabric. Suggest a mechanism for its formation. [Pg.1122]
