Recent structural investigations of monomeric metal acetylacetonates show that they can associate to low polymers. X-Ray studies have shown that zinc acetylacetonate is trimeric ([Zn(AcAc)2]3) (8). Other examples are [Ni(AcAc)2]3 and [Co(AcAc)2]4. The tendency of these molecules to form polymers is stated to result from a preference of the metal atoms for a coordination number greater than four, but not necessarily six. Ferrous acetylacetonate is a monomer in dilute benzene solution, but is a hexamer at 5 C in concentrated solution. Similar associative tendencies were found for Fe(II) (trifluoroacetyl-acetonato)2, Fe(II) (hexafluoroacetylacetonato)2, and Fe(ll) (2,2,6,6-tetra-methylheptane-3,5-dionato)2 (23). [Pg.227]

The corresponding capped porphyrin-Fe(III) complex was reduced with chromous bis(acetylacetonate) in benzene to a crystalline ferrous porphyrin which reversibly oxygenates in solution at room temperature. The kinetic stability of solutions containing this oxygen complex depends on many factors such as the temperature, the nature and coordination of the porphyrin and of the axial base (1-methylimidazole is much superior to pyridine), the partial pressure of oxygen, and the solvent polarity. [Pg.352]
