Feldspathic sand

In California, sand is mined from sedimentary sandstone formations of early tertiary age (namely Paleocene deposits south of Mission Viejo, in the Trabuco Canyon area of Orange County) and Eocene deposits near lone in Amador County and Oceanside in San Diego County. These deposits are essentially feldspathic sands containing clays and heavy minerals. In most cases, glass sand on the West Coast is recovered only after beneficiation. Oriskany and St. Peter sandstones remain the two major sources of glass sand in the United States. 

Feldspathic sand - This is natural silica sand containing 10-35% feldspar, usually potash spar or soda spar. This sand is described, in decreasing feldspar content, as river sand, dune sand, and beach sand. 

Specific lithological classification permits placing constraints on the final petrophysical solution. In the case of feldspathic sand, for example, one might wish to predict the presence of illite/smectite, chlorite and kaolinite based on various feldspar decomposition models. Similarly, it might be predicted that calcic dolomite, one of the specific lithologies for carbonate, is composed mainly of dolomite with small amounts of calcite and possibly anhydrite (Pemper et al., 2006). 

Natural feldspars used for the preparation of ceramics are mineral mixtures. Thus, the commercial potassium products can contain between 2.5 and 3.5% of albite mass, whereas anorthite and a small quantity of orthoclase, between 0.5 and 3.2%, are often present in the available sodium feldspars [MAN 94]. A sediment made up of particles that fall within the sand range is called sand. If consolidated, it is sandstone. Modifiers may be added to refine the description of a particular stone. For instance, if the sand is mostly made of feldspar grains, it would be called a feldspathic sandstone. If mostly quartz, a quartz sandstone. And so on. 

Petrographically, the main Magnolia reservoirs are composed of fine grained sand to silt size feldspathic quartzose sandstones. Authigenic components consist of occasional discrete patches of calcite and siderite cements that are unlikely to impact fluid flow characteristics. The sands and silts are otherwise devoid of authigenic components. 

Feldspathic sandstones or arcoses show some K content from feldspar in the sand. Thus, they show a very low Th/K ratio (<10 ) and a somewhat lower matrix density than pure quartz (2.65 x 10 kg/m ) due to the low density of feldspar ((2.52—2.53) x 10 kg/m ).
