The first tumor-suppressor gene to be cloned was the retinoblastoma (Rb) gene. Alfred Knudson had been studying the predisposition of children from certain families to have a high rate of retinoblastoma eye tumors. He noticed that the rate of hereditary retinoblastoma in these children was as much as 1000 times higher than expected, compared to the normal population.
