Extractor, continuous shaking

After cooling, the mixture is extracted twice with 200-cc. portions of ether to remove any material that has not reacted with the bisulfite. One-half of the aqueous solution is placed in the shaking extractor together with 650 cc. of ether. The calculated amount of 10 per cent aqueous sodium hydroxide (one mole of sodium hydroxide per mole of sodium bisulfite used) is now added as described for purification of the citral. Shaking is continued for fifteen minutes after the addition of the alkali is complete... [Pg.103]

A solid-liquid extraction is the selective dissolution of a component of a solid material through contact with a liquid solvent. Two methods of accomplishing this are 1) shaking the solid with the solvent in the same container for a specified period of time, and 2) using a Soxhlet extractor, in which fresh solvent is continually cycled through the solid for a specified period of time. [Pg.531]

Preextract the continuous liquid-liquid extractor for three hours with methylene chloride and reagent water. Filter the sample as in Paragraph 9.5.1. Allow the extractor to cool, discard the methylene chloride, and add. the filtered aqueous sample to the continuous liquid-liquid extractor. Add 60 mL of methylene chloride to the sample bottle, seal and shake for 30 seconds. [Pg.467]
