The goal of the research will be the conversion of targets into screens for potential small-molecule effectors of their function, or the determination of their molecular structures as a prelude to drug discovery studies. It is anticipated that the NCI may assist in these steps, as well as facilitating access to compound and natural product extract libraries, and the preclinical development of any promising leads discovered through the process. 

In 2006, microbial and chemical groups at Merck demonstrated that by screening their older microbial extract libraries against novel screens utilizing antisense technologies. 

System models built with parametric and extracted libraries provide a straightforward way to encapsulate and document design problems and solutions for future developments. We estimate today the number of metabolites identified in living organisms at more than 200,000. This diversity reflects the evolution of species and their interactions, in short, biochemical diversity (see Introduction). To understand, inventory and manage this chemical diversity requires the development of complex databases integrating different types of information (like the extract library of ICSN, Cantharella, Ecimar or the eco-chemical library) (see Chapter 8).
