Experimental Setups of On-Column Reaction Chromatography

The choice of the chromatographic method and the selection of suitable columns depend on the physical and chemical properties of reactants and products as well as on the desired reaction conditions. The use of internal standards is highly recommended for quantitative analysis of reactants, products, and by-products. It may serve as an important analytical tool to recognize unexpected side reactions such as on-column polymerizations of the reactants. Such reactions lead to a shift in the mass balance and can be detected with the help of an internal standard. 

Both experimental approaches can be coupled with additional detectors, for example, mass spectrometers (MS), to obtain additional structural information of the formed products and by-products.
