Exchange reactions, photochemical isomerization

In this review our focus will be largely on thermal ligand exchange and isomerizations. Other reactions, including photochemical ones, will be dealt with only briefly. Most examples will come from studies of cobalt(III) and chromium(III) compounds merely because the chemistry of these metals is more fully developed. 

Quantum yields and product ratios for photolysis of cis- and irons-[Rh(en)2(NH3)Cl] are compatible with the generally accepted dissociative mechanism for this type of reaction. Photolysis of [Rh(en)2(NH3)(OH2)] leads to a photostationary state in which isomerization, racemization of the cis isomer, and water exchange at both cis and trans isomers occur concurrently. This investigation also established parameters for thermal water exchange at the two [Rh(en)2(NH3)(OH2)] cations. The product of photolysis of [Rh(tren)Br2] has a different structure from the product of thermal aquation of this cation. A combination of thermal and photochemical activation has been explored for the trans-[Rh(en)2Br2] cation. ...
