Eunicea

New diterpenoids of the dolabellane class have been reported, such as clavinflol B (592) from the Taiwanese soft coral Clavularia inflata (706). This metabolite has comparable cytotoxicity against the KB cell line to doxorubicin. A sea whip of the genus Eunicea has yielded the cembrane 593 (707). Both 592 and 593 are considered to be natural since no chlorinated solvents were used in the isolation process, and in both metabolites the chlorine is attached to the less substituted carbon, opposite to what is expected for acid-induced epoxide ring opening. A Kenyan soft coral, Sinu-laria erecta, contains the norcembrane sinularectin (594) (708).

Fuscoside B is a lobane diterpenoid isolated from the Caribbean gorgonian Eunicea fusca. It has been evaluated for the inhibitory activities against COX-1, 5-LOX, 12-LOX, PLA2, and other eicosanoid biosynthesis pathways and found only to irreversibly inhibit the 5-LOX pathway with an IC50 value of 10 pM. Diterpenes of the bicyclic D. group were first isolated from the herbivorous lumpfishDolobe/la califomica. Since then similar metabolites have been found in brown algae of the family Dictyotaceae on which D. califomica feed. Finally, D. were also detected in sea fans. For example, palominol [(15,3 ,7 ,ll/l)-dola-bella-3,7,12-trien-18-ol] CjoHjjO, Mr 288.47, mp. 52-53 °C, [d o -33° (CHCI,), was isolated from Eunicea laciniata.
