The photodissociation spectra of the Mg(L) complexes of ethyl isocyanate and ethyl isothiocyanate show some common photofragments. Aside from the ubiquitous formation of Mg+ (cf equation 39), both ethyl isocyanate and ethyl isothiocyanate yield products from attack of the N—C single bond (equations 57 and 58). The ethyl isothiocyanate complex also yields MgS via equation 59. The photodissociation spectrum of the ethyl thiocyanate isomer was also examined and gave the products shown in equations 60-62. Thus each isomer gives a unique ionic product [Mgs for ethyl isothiocyanate (equation 59) vs MgNC+ for ethyl thiocyanate (equation 62)] which allows their distinction. Finally, the Mg(ethyl isocyanate) +" complexes simply undergo solvent evaporation for n = 2 and 3 (cf equation 52).

Moreover, product formation was not the same. Dibenzyl ethylsulfonium salt 72 gave only benzyl ethyl sulfide (73) and benzyl thiocyanate 74, but no dibenzyl sulfide or ethyl thiocyanate. By contrast, the cyclic sulfonium salt 75 gave a mixture containing chiefly (80%) dihydroisothianaphthene (76) with an equivalent amount of ethyl thiocyanate (77) and a minor amount (20%) of the sulfide-thiocyanate 78. This work represents the first direct experimental information on the rate of bimolecular nucleophilic substitution and relative orientation of the benzene ring and the leaving group and it demonstrates clearly the importance of stereoelectronic effects in these reactions.

Ethanesulfonyl chloride 618 A suspension of ethyl thiocyanate (20 g) in water (200 ml) is vigorously stirred while a stream of chlorine (2-3 1 per h) is led in, the temperature being kept between 0° and 5°. Passage of chlorine is stopped when the mixture assumes a permanent green color which indicates presence of an excess of chlorine, and this excess is then removed in a slow stream of air. The oil that separates is taken up in ether, and that solution is washed with sodium bisulfite and sodium hydrogen carbonate solutions and dried over calcium chloride. Removal of the ether and distillation in a vacuum afford the sulfonyl chloride (79% yield), b.p. 71-72°/20 mm.
