In the early 1950s, in response to an expanded US biological weapons programme, Porton initiated a series of short- and long-range sea trials near the Isle of Lewis (Outer Hebrides) in Operation Cauldron—in reference to the successful wartime commando raid—and Operation Hesperus. Cauldron required 158 members of staff, and Hesperus employed a total of [Pg.297]
