Ethanol ionic entropies

Partial molal entropy data in ethanol are nearly as sparse as the heat capacity data. The only comprehensive entropy data in this solvent are those of Jakuszewski and Taniewska-Osinska, who report 5 for HCl and several alkali metal halides in ethanol. Ionic entropies have been calculated for the alkali metals from free energies and enthalpies of solvation, but since extra-thermodynamic assumptions were necessary, the meaning of the values is questionable. Ionic entropies in ethanol are somewhat more negative than in methanol and considerably more negative than in water. [Pg.52]

Electromotive force measurements of the cell Pt, H2 HBr(m), X% alcohol, Y% water AgBr-Ag were made at 25°, 35°, and 45°C in the following solvent systems (1) water, (2) water-ethanol (30%, 60%, 90%, 99% ethanol), (3) anhydrous ethanol, (4) water-tert-butanol (30%, 60%, 91% and 99% tert-butanol), and (5) anhydrous tert-butanol. Calculations of standard cell potential were made using the Debye-Huckel theory as extended by Gronwall, LaMer, and Sandved. Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, entropy changes, and mean ionic activity coefficients were calculated for each solvent mixture and temperature. Relationships of the stand-ard potentials and thermodynamic functons with respect to solvent compositions in the two mixed-solvent systems and the pure solvents were discussed. [Pg.354]

For molecular solutes, the increase in entropy upon dissolving is typically much smaller than for ionic solutes. For a solid such as glucose, there is no separation into ions, and for a liquid such as ethanol, the breakdown of a crystal structure is absent as well. Furthermore, in pure ethanol and in pure water, the molecules form many H bonds, so there is relatively little change in their freedom of motion when they are mixed (Figure 20.6). The small increase in the entropy of dissolved ethanol arises from the random mixing of the molecules. [Pg.659]
