Estimation of Solubility Parameters

When solubility parameter data is needed quickly, experimental measurements may not be readily available. In such instances a broad approximation may be sufficient. This can be obtained through use of group contribution approaches. Two suggested methods are by use of coefficients prepared Small et ol. (see Robeson [13]) and Coleman et al. [14]. The group contribution method for estimating solubility parameters is based on the expression shown in Eq. (4.3)  [Pg.180]

A selection of the coefficients has been tabulated so as to provide a preliminary approach that the researcher might use to determine whether a more in-depth [Pg.180]

Compatibility of two- and threecomponent systems of poly(vinyl chloride) with homo- and copolymers of methyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate has been studied. The mixtures were tested for compatibility in the dynamic viscosity of polymer solutions, in microscopic observations in polarized light, as well as by dynamic mechanical measurements. It was found that poly(methyl methacrylate) and methacrylic copolymers were compatible with PVC. Poly(butyl methacrylate) appears to be incompatible with PVC. Estimation of solubility parameter values 6 made it possible to predict the compatibility of polymer pairs. Critical A6 value for compatible polymers has been found to be 0.5 (cal cm 3)1/2. [Pg.101]

Estimates of solubility parameters for a variety of liquids are available in the literature. Table 4.1.6 illustrates the values of solubility parameters for some common liquids. If the solute prefers the solvent (phase 1, species 3), then <5,-is closer to S3 than S, and therefore, X) > 1. (Note Generally, the more polar the liquid, the larger the value of the solubility parameter water, which is highly polar, has a <5,-of 21, whereas n-pentane, which is extremely nonpolar, has a 3i of only 7.1. Further, the higher the required energy of vaporization, the higher the solubility parameter.)... [Pg.218]

The polymer solubility can be estimated using solubility parameters (11) and the value of the critical oligomer molecular weight can be estimated from the Flory-Huggins theory of polymer solutions (12), but the optimum diluent is still usually chosen empirically. [Pg.268]

Although being qualitatively in agreement with experimental results, disagreements between experiment and theory remain. Besides the composition, /a, and the total degree of polymerization, N, all theoretical works refer to the segmental interaction parameter x This parameter can be estimated from a relationship to the solubility parameters. The ODT as a thermodynamic measure of the incompatibility was used to compare a set of symmetrically composed diblock copolymers from different hydrocarbons, polydimethyl-siloxane and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) [33]. While the behaviour of hydrocarbon diblock copolymers was successfully described by a consistent set of solubility parameters, this procedure failed for systems containing PEO. The... [Pg.146]

The solvent should have high solubility for the solute being crystallized. The capacity of the solvent to solvate can be quantitatively assessed through its solubility parameter value. Under the like dissolves like paradigm, anon-polar solute is generally more soluble in a non-polar solvent. Hence a solvent with solubility parameter value close to that of the solute can be assumed to have high solubility for the solute. The following empirical equation can be used to estimate the solubility parameter... [Pg.118]

Although experimental methods for estimation of this parameter for unsaturated aldehydes are lacking in the documented literature, an estimated value of -0.588 was reported by Ellington et al. Solubility parameters were developed by Charles Hansen as a way of predicting if one material will dissolve in another and form a solution. They are based on the idea that "like dissolves like" where one molecule is defined as being like another if it bonds to itself in a similar way. The Hildebrand solubility parameter (8) provides a numerical estimate of the degree of interaction between materials, and can be a good indication of solubility, particularly for non-polar materials such as many rubbers. Materials with similar values of solubility parameters are likely to be miscible [7]. [Pg.88]
