Film samples were exposed to natural weathering conditions on an exposure rack constructed of wooden 2 X 4 s. The samples were mounted directly on a 2 X 4 facing south at an angle of 45° to the horizontal. A measure of the UV light received by the samples was originally obtained from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (ENCON) reports, kindly supplied by Mr. William Delaware of ENCON. These reports included both total sun and sky radiation and UV radiation measured by Eppley radiometers (photometers). The ENCON monitoring station in Schenectady is within four miles of the exposure rack so no appreciable differences in light intensity should be expected. More recently, a UV radiometer has been mounted directly on the exposure rack to obtain more accurate measurements. [Pg.99]

The author thanks the General Electric Research and Development Center for permission to publish this work and thanks Mr. S. T. Rice for many of the yellowness index and UV spectral measurements. Mr. William Delaware of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is also thanked for his data. [Pg.105]

The Marine Biotechnology Institute (MBI) was founded in 1987 for the study and applications of biodiversity in marine environments. Currently, and within the scope of the present book, the research area of relevance is industrial applications of microbiology . The institute also performs research in C02 fixation. The Applied Microbiology Laboratory is searching cost-effective utilization of microbes for environmental conservation and restoration. In particular, the decontamination of areas polluted with petroleum-related compounds has been addressed. Attention has been paid to removal of polycyclic hydrocarbons. They are also developing processing methods for the conversion of biomass and organic wastes by methane fermentation. [Pg.349]

The analytical techniques proposed in the literature generally give reliable information on lipids present in the paint layer. However, the presence of lipid mixtures and of particular environmental conservation conditions may affect the lipid pattern to such an extent that their identification may be very difficult and sometimes erroneous. Thus, a multianalytical approach is recommended which integrates chromatographic data with techniques such as mapping based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy or SIM on cross-sections, in order to better understand the distribution of lipids in the various paint layers. [Pg.209]

The centers appeared to be doing the job for which they were designed, and by 1980 they had become an accepted way of dealing with chemical usage In an agricultural setting of diverse operations on 20-300 acre tracts. Eventually, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation voiced several concerns regarding their operation ... [Pg.118]

Pesticides from the CCCs were shown not to have leached Into any of the available ground water sources. In addition, the soil core analyses Indicated that disposed chemicals had traveled less than 18 Inches from the leach lines In five years of operation. Within the defined time frame, the CCCs were confining the chemicals. A long-term follow-up survey. Including test wells, would be useful to determine if migrating pesticides eventually reach the water table. The absence of any Increased risk to applicators, or of any environmental drawbacks, as measured by soil arthropod populations, was established. Consequently, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservations has regarded these Installations as normal agricultural operations and not required further documentation. [Pg.123]

The dlchloromethane-soluble fraction of POM showed a consistent association with the sulfate factor. Previous summer studies (29, 30) have Indicated correlations between this fraction and ozone. As sulfate and ozone are strongly correlated during the summer months in the northeastern part of the U.S. (31), there may be a stronger association between DCM and ozone than DCM and sulfate. As of this date, the ozone data have been obtained from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation but have not been entered into the computer files. [Pg.206]
