Entropic recoil

The first two stages observed in the folding trajectories corresponded to a fast entropic recoil of the extended polymer, followed by a cooperative collapse that reduces the length of the protein back to its folded length [10]. To further... [Pg.331]

This unique behavior of an HMHEC can be exploited in applied-flow systems, such as latex paints. High molecular weight HECs tend to retain their elasticity even at high shear because of the entropic recoiling forces... [Pg.354]

Miscibility or compatibility provided by the compatibilizer or TLCP itself can affect the dimensional stability of in situ composites. The feature of ultra-high modulus and low viscosity melt of a nematic liquid crystalline polymer is suitable to induce greater dimensional stability in the composites. For drawn amorphous polymers, if the formed articles are exposed to sufficiently high temperatures, the extended chains are retracted by the entropic driving force of the stretched backbone, similar to the contraction of the stretched rubber network [61,62]. The presence of filler in the extruded articles significantly reduces the total extent of recoil. This can be attributed to the orientation of the fibers in the direction of drawing, which may act as a constraint for a certain amount of polymeric material surrounding them. [Pg.598]

The fundamental driving force behind the remarkable elastic properties of the elastin polymer is believed to be entropic, where stretching decreases the entropy of the system and elastic recoil is driven by a spontaneous return to maximum entropy. The precise molecular basis for elasticity has not been fully elucidated and a number of models exist. Two main categories of structure-function models have been proposed those in which elastin is considered to be isotropic and devoid of structure, and those which consider elastin to be anisotropic with regions of order (Vrhovski and Weiss, 1998). [Pg.449]
