Surfactants come in a very wide variety of sizes and compositions. What they have in common is their affinity for the surface of a liquid, which means that the free energy of the solvent/solute system is reduced when a surfactant molecule migrates to the surface, compared to when it is in the bulk of the fluid. As the concentration along the surface (F, in mol/m ) increases, the original interface starts to give way to two new interfaces solvent-surfactant and surfactant-air, with a lower global surface tension (y, typically measured in mN/m or mJ/cm ).
