The 14 lanthanides, or rare earth elements (shown in bold below), are found in period 6 of the periodic table  

The electron configuration of some of these atoms is uncertain and neither lanthanum nor lutetium behave as typical lanthanides, although both are frequently included in the group. The configurations of the lanthanides are listed in Table SI.3.
