Energetics of Archaeoglobus and Pyrococcus - non-methanogenic thermophilic archaea related to methanogens 

Based upon rRNA sequence comparison, the genera Archaeoglobus and Pyrococcus are closely related to the methanogens. Archaeoglobus is related to Methanosarcina, and Pyrococcus branches off between the extreme thermophiles Methanococcus and 

Methanopyrus (Fig. 1). In this section of the review we report recent data on the energy metabolism of Archaeoglobus fulgidus and Pyrococcus furiosus.
