The interpretation of the spirit of the world as a divine substance was widely diffused in the mid-seventeenth century. This outlook was shared by Lefebvre and Willis, among others. One of the most extreme positions on this point was Robert Fludd s. See the article by Norma Emerton in this volume. It is noteworthy that Boyle s position was very close to van Helmont s.
