More common, and also more interesting, are elongated clusters or linear trends, which will appear when compounds have a corrunon property (e.g., polarity) but differ in other (e.g., volatility). These properties are related to the separation mechanism of the D and D columns. 

In order to derive the oligomeric units in a formal sense, the [MogXg] duster is stretched along its three fold axis, and n-1 planar [Mog g] fragments are inserted into the (now elongated) clusters. The corresponding number of A atoms are found in the channels between clusters. 

The calculated four-dimensional FES indicate that the liquid and solid Ic basins are separated by a barrier with a height of approximately 79 ksT. However, the system size turned out to be too small for an accurate estimate of the barrier. In fact, due to the self-interaction between the periodic images, crystallizations occurred in an anisotropic way and elongated clusters formed, which eventually generated thin slabs of ice. 

The third process drawn in Figure 42(d) shows the reverse situation in which the spacers are larger than the electrically conductive particles. In this case, the loading level of silver is adjusted just below the percolation threshold so that any significant reduction of the film thickness results in the formation of elongated clusters ensuring the electrical continuity.
