Elements of Relativistic Kinematics

The special theory of relativity developed by Einstein in 1905 is based on two simple postulates. [Pg.79]

FIRST POSTULATE The laws of nature and the results of all experiments performed in a given frame of reference (system of coordinates) are independent of the translational motion of the system as a whole. [Pg.80]

SECOND POSTULATE The speed of light in vacuum is independent of the motion of its source. [Pg.80]

These two postulates, simple as they are, predict consequences that were unthinkable at that time. The most famous predictions of the special theory of relativity are [Pg.80]

The mass of a body changes when its speed changes. [Pg.80]
