Electron transfer and catalysis

In this review article, the functions of polymers and molecular assemblies for solar energy conversion will be described including photochemical conversion models, elemental processes for the conversion such as charge separation, electron transfer, and catalysis for water decomposition, as well as solar cells.

Iron-sulfur proteins play important roles in electron transfer and catalysis in organisms ranging from simple bacteria through to higher animals. The common structural motif is iron tetrahedrally coordinated by sulfur donors with the single metal centre in rubredoxin bound by four cysteine thiolates while the 2Fe and 4Fe sites of ferredoxins have respectively two and one monodentate thiolate ligands and two or three bridging sulfido units (Fig. 11). 

The energetic process of photosynthesis is represented by Fig. 13-1 where the electron from water is driven to higher energy in two steps (at photosystems II and I, abbreviated to PSII and I) at the reaction center of chlorophyll, and finally reduces CO2 to produce carbohydrate. Metal complexes and metal clusters play a decisive role in photoinduced energy transfer, photoinduced electron transfer and catalysis. 

Most P450 enzymes reqirire electron dehvery from NAD(P)H via one or more redox partner enzymes, and there are issues with apphcation of P450s for production of oxidized (and other) chemical products in light of factors such as the expense of NAD(P)H, slow rates of electron transfer and catalysis and uncoupling of elec-...
