Electromagnetic transference

A dye molecule has one or more absorption bands in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum (approximately 350-700 nm). After absorbing photons, the electronically excited molecules transfer to a more stable (triplet) state, which eventually emits photons (fluoresces) at a longer wavelength (composing three-level system.) The delay allows an inverted population to build up. Sometimes there are more than three levels. For example, the europium complex (Figure 18.15) has a four-level system. [Pg.132]

As in chemical sensitization, spectral sensitization is usually done after precipitation but before coating, and usually is achieved by adsorbing certain organic dyes to the silver haUde surfaces (47,48,212—229). Once the dye molecule is adsorbed to the crystal surface, the effects of electromagnetic radiation absorbed by the dye can be transferred to the crystal. As a result of this transfer, mobile electrons are produced in the conduction band of the silver haUde grain. Once in the conduction band, the electrons are available to initiate latent-image formation. [Pg.449]

Techniques for handling sodium in commercial-scale appHcations have improved (5,23,98,101,102). Contamination by sodium oxide is kept at a minimum by completely welded constmction and inert gas-pressured transfers. Residual oxide is removed by cold traps or micrometallic filters. Special mechanical pumps or leak-free electromagnetic pumps and meters work well with clean Hquid sodium. Corrosion of stainless or carbon steel equipment is minimi2ed by keeping the oxide content low. The 8-h TWA PEL and ceiling TLV for sodium or sodium oxide or hydroxide smoke exposure is 2 mg/m. There is no defined AID for pure sodium, as even the smallest quantity ingested could potentially cause fatal injury. [Pg.168]

Electromagnetic Force When the fluid is an electrical conductor, as is the case with molten metals, it is possible to impress an electromagnetic field around the fluid conduit in such a way that a driving force that will cause flow is created. Such pumps have been developed for the handling of heat-transfer hquids, especially for nuclear reactors. [Pg.900]

A transformer has both dielectric capacitances and electromagnetic inductances. Surge transference thus depends on the electrostatic and electromagnetic transient behaviour of these parameters as noted below. [Pg.599]

Light-scattering processes involve the interaction of light with gases or particles in such a manner that the direction or frequency of the light is altered. Absorption processes occur when the electromagnetic radiation interacts with gases or particles and is transferred internally to the gas or particle. [Pg.138]

IONIZING RADIATION The transfer of energy in the form of particles or electromagnetic waves of a wavelength of 100 nanometers or less or a frequency of 3 x 10 hertz or more capable of producing ions directly or indirectly. [Pg.14]
