Electromagnetic spectrum, types Table

A university student recently had a busy day. Each of the student s activities on that day (reading, having a dental x-ray, making popcorn in a microwave oven, and getting a suntan) involved radiation from a different part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Complete the following table and match each type of radiation to the appropriate event ... [Pg.174]

As with UV-vis spectroscopy, IR and NMR spectroscopy are based on the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with molecules, whereas MS is different in that it relies on high-energy particles (electrons or ions) to break up the molecules. The relationship between the various types of spectroscopy and the electromagnetic spectrum is shown in Table 28.1. [Pg.180]

Some transitions require more energy than others, so we must use radiation of the appropriate frequency to determine them. In this chapter, we will discuss three types of spectroscopy that depend on such transitions. They are nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. Table 12.1 summarizes the regions of the electromagnetic spectrum in which transitions for these three types of spectroscopy can be observed. We will begin with NMR spectroscopy and nuclear spin transitions, which require exceedingly small amounts of energy. [Pg.358]
