The same regeneration concepts, as well as the limitations, as described above, could be applied to a PEMFC stack, providing the PEMEC is operated as an electrochemical hydrogen pump. In this mode of operation, water is circulated over the cathode side. The cell is electrochemically driven, similar to an electrolyzer. Hydrogen is consumed at the anode with production of protons and the protons are electrochemically transported to the cathode to form hydrogen gas.
