ELECTRICAL METHODS FOR CHARGED SPECIES

The detection and estimation of ions in the gas phase is carried out very conveniently by the mass spectrometric methods described in Section 3. However, electrically charged species may be detected also by methods depending on the electrical properties peculiar to these species. This section gives a very brief outline of some of the techniques which have been employed in the study of charged species in chemical reactions. Flames offer the most readily investigated chemi-ionization system, and most of the work reported here derives from flame studies. 

The microwave absorption of an electron cloud may have a resonance character if a magnetic field be applied. The condition for this cyclotron resonance is that
