Details of the work on which the structures and absolute configurations of the alkaloids of Elaeocarpus sphaericus are based have now been published, and the course of the sodium borohydride reduction of (+ )-elaeocarpiline (1) has been elucidated. Elaeocarpine was obtained from Elaeocarpus polydactylus and other species in the racemic form. Elaeocarpiline, which was isolated from Elaeocarpus sphaericus, has a partially saturated aromatic ring.
