Effect rotational angles

The Sc(acac)3 molecule possesses D3 symmetry . The barrier to internal rotation of the Me groups (y axis in Figure 2) estimated from the effective rotation angle is low at the temperature of the GED experiment, Vb = 3.6 kJmol , therefore the rotation may be considered as virtually free.

T is a rotational angle, which determines the spatial orientation of the adiabatic electronic functions v / and )/ . In triatomic molecules, this orientation follows directly from symmetry considerations. So, for example, in a II state one of the elecbonic wave functions has its maximum in the molecular plane and the other one is perpendicular to it. There is another source of flexibility in polypeptide helices. It is the thermal fluctuations of bond rotation angles about their preferred a-helix values. This effect occurs without destroying the overall helical structure of the molecule and will become more important at higher temperature.
