Separation of components with a low concentration. Distillation is not well suited to the separation of products which form a low concentration in the feed mixture. Adsorption and absorption are both effective alternative means. 

Electronic Applications. The PGMs have a number of important and diverse appHcations in the electronics industry (30). The most widely used are palladium and mthenium. Palladium or palladium—silver thick-film pastes are used in multilayer ceramic capacitors and conductor inks for hybrid integrated circuits (qv). In multilayer ceramic capacitors, the termination electrodes are silver or a silver-rich Pd—Ag alloy. The internal electrodes use a palladium-rich Pd—Ag alloy. Palladium salts are increasingly used to plate edge connectors and lead frames of semiconductors (qv), as a cost-effective alternative to gold. In 1994, 45% of total mthenium demand was for use in mthenium oxide resistor pastes (see Electrical connectors). 

Other energy considerations for cooling towers include the use of two-speed or variable-speed drives on cooling-tower fans, and proper cooling-water chemistry to prevent fouling in users (see Water, industrial water treatment). Air coolers can be a cost-effective alternative to cooling towers at 50—90°C, just below the level where heat recovery is economical. 

In 1995, about 28-30 x 10 tires were retreaded (54). Retreading has been the most cost-effective alternative to recycling mbber. However, worn retreaded tires usually are discarded in a landfill. Approximately 10% of discarded automobile tires and 55—70% of tmck and bus tires are retreaded (55). 

The success of quinine inspired the search for other antimalarials. The greatest impetus for the development of synthetic dmgs came this century when the two World Wars intermpted the supply of cinchona bark to the combatants. A stmcturally related 4-quinolinemethanol is mefloquine (65, Lariam [51773-92-3]) which now serves as an effective alternative agent for chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum. This is a potent substance that requires less than one-tenth the dose of quinine to effect cures. There are some untoward side effects associated with this dmg such as gastrointestinal upset and dizziness, but they tend to be transient. Mefloquine is not recommended for use by those using beta-blockers, those whose job requires fine coordination and spatial discrimination, or those with a history of epilepsy or psychiatric disorders. A combination of mefloquine with Fansidar (a mixture of pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine) is known as Fansimef but its use is not recommended. Resistance to mefloquine has been reported even though the compound has not been in wide use. 

Disadvantages of these continuous countercurrent systems are associated primarily with the complexity of the equipment required and with the attrition resulting from the transpoiT of the ion exchanger. An effective alternative for intermediate scale processes is the use of merry-go-round systems and SMB units employing only packed-beds with no movement of the ion-exchanger. 

Avoid the use of water-mix synthetic fluids containing nitrites if there is a technologically effective alternative. 

Safety No year goes by without some widely used chemical being declared suspect on toxicity grounds. The paint industry has responded rapidly to eliminate toxic chemicals from coatings or to show how they can be used safely in an industrial environment. Examples are the elimination of specific ether-alcohol solvents and the introduction of air-fed hoods for spraying isocyanates. Of particular interest in corrosion prevention is the current pressure to eliminate chromate pigments. Currently there are no equally effective alternatives and the emphasis has had to be on safe usage. The search for replacements continues. 

Activation methods can be divided into two groups. Activation by addition of selected metals (a few wt%), mainly transition metals, e.g., fine powders of Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, Pt, Pd, etc. ", or chlorides of these metals when these are reducible to the metal by hydrogen during presintering. The mechanism of activation is not understood (surface tension, surface diffusion, etc.) but is related to the electronic structure of the metal additive. Activation by carbon is also effective. Alternatively, activation utilizes powders in a specially activated state, e.g., very fine (submicronic) powders. ... 

The use of iodotrimethylsilane for this purpose provides an effective alternative to known methods. Thus the reaction of primary and secondary methyl ethers with iodotrimethylsilane in chloroform or acetonitrile at 25—60° for 2—64 hours affords the corresponding trimethylsilyl ethers in high yield. The alcohols may be liberated from the trimethylsilyl ethers by methanolysis. The mechanism of the ether cleavage is presumed to involve initial formation of a trimethylsilyl oxonium ion which is converted to the silyl ether by nucleophilic attack of iodide at the methyl group. tert-Butyl, trityl, and benzyl ethers of primary and secondary alcohols are rapidly converted to trimethylsilyl ethers by the action of iodotrimethylsilane, probably via heterolysis of silyl oxonium ion intermediates. The cleavage of aryl methyl ethers to aryl trimethylsilyl ethers may also be effected more slowly by reaction with iodotrimethylsilane at 25—50° in chloroform or sulfolane for 12-125 hours, with iodotrimethylsilane at 100—110° in the absence of solvent, " and with iodotrimethylsilane generated in situ from iodine and trimcthylphenylsilane at 100°. ... 

Various forms of psychotherapy are regarded as effective interventions in mild to moderate depression, but studies comparing the economics of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy are few (Rosenbaum and Hylan, 1999). One study found that the total health-care costs for patients who received psychotherapy were no different from those for patients who received an antidepressant. However, no efficacy measure was used (Edgell and Hylan, 1997). A randomized, prospective study which evaluated the treatment of depression with nortriptyline, interpersonal therapy or treatment as usual, with outcomes expressed in quality-adjusted life years, found that nortriptyline but not interpersonal therapy was a cost-effective alternative to treatment as usual (Lave et al, 1998).

Since many years, pectolytic enzymes have been widely used in industrial beverage processing to improve either the quality and the yields in fruit juice extraction or the characteristics of the final product [1,2]. To this purpose, complex enzymatic mixtures, containing several pectolytic enzymes and often also cellulose, hemicellulose and ligninolytic activities, are usually employed in the free form. The interactions among enzymes, substrates and other components of fruit juice make the system very difficult to be investigated and only few publications are devoted to the study of enzymatic pools [3-5], An effective alternative way to carry out the depectinisation process is represented by the use of immobilized enzymes. This approach allows for a facile and efficient enzymatic reaction control to be achieved. In fact, it is possible to avoid or at least to reduce the level of extraneous substances originating from the raw pectinases in the final product. In addition, continuous processes can be set up.
