Hayashi and Midorikawa have since found that the dimethyldithiocarbamate group of the products obtained above can be reductively cleaved in high yield by either lithium in ethylamine or sodium in liquid ammonia. Consequently, di- and trisubstituted olefins are readily prepared in this way. The method was used successfully for synthesis of several rianr-alkenol sex pheromones of insects, as formulated for the synthesis of E-7-tetradecene-l-ol acetate (8) in high overall yield.
