Dynamical studies on polymers in solution give information about the segmental diffusion, for which several theories exist. The quantity of interest here is the initial slope il of the intermediate scattering law S (6,0,  

It can be seen that D is the Lorentzian line width. Aw. Predictions for the behaviour 

Q q — Diffusion of whole molecule (very small q) fl — Segmental diffusion with hydrodynamic interactions (Zimm model) 

D T/t])q — Segmental diffusion with no hydrodynamic interactions (Rouse model) 

D (Tfq)q — Infinitely long chains in dilute solution (large q) where q is the solvent viscosity.
