Cefadroxil (also sometimes spelled cephadroxil), an antibiotic originally developed by Bristol-Myers (BM) and marketed under the trade names Ultracef and Duricef, had combined sales in the US of 100 million in 1988. A crystalline monohydrate (apparently discovered serendipitously), claimed in U.S. Patent No. 4,504,657 (the 657 patent) issued in March 1985, is described in the patent in terms of its X-ray diffraction pattern (Fig. 10.2). The improvement of this substance over the earlier known material included greater stability and high bulk density, properties which enabled the production of smaller pills. [Pg.301]
